Trip Program
Montepulciano Program
A full day tour to the area south of Siena. Montepulciano is encircled by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in 1511 for Cosimo I. Within the city walls the streets are crammed with Reinassance style palazzi and churches, but the town is mainly known for its good local "Vino Nobile"wines. The most ancient document concerning the wine of Montepulciano dates back to 789: the minor clerk Amipert gave the church of St. Salvador a strip of land containing a vineyard and the castle of Policiano.
The wine of Montepulciano became very important in 1685, when Francesco Redi dedicated a few lines to the wine in his writings "Bacchus in Tuscany".The variety of grapes Prugnolo Gentile, Canaiolo, Nero, Mammolo,Malvasia del Chianti make its fragrance intense. During the grape -gathering, grapes are carefully chosen: only the proper ones are directed to the production of the Nobile wine. The other grapes are used for the red wine of Montepulciano or for the table wine. The wine has to be kept for at least two years in oak casks before the D O C G exam and bottling. Only after three years can it earn the name "riserva". We will have the opportunity to taste several wines and typical dishes of this area like cheese, salami, or hand made pasta with mushrooms sauce.
