Trip
Program |
A full day excursion to visit this medieval town south of Siena, Montalcino. It is well known for the production of one of the best wines in the world the "Brunello".
|
Though just a small town, it played a part in Italy's Renaissance history, during the war of 1550 between Siena and Florence. Montalcino sided with Siena and when Cosimo dè Medici sieged to the fortress for months, Montalcino refused to surrender. When Siena fell Montalcino had to admit defeat and it began to decline. Thanks to Brunello today this small town is well known in all the world again.
|
Brunello wines have always been well known, made using only sangiovese grapes and appreciated for its strong taste and its elegant flavors. Situated on the top of a hill at 564 metres above sea level, Montalcino has preserved its charm of an untouched medieval village. Walking through the town you can admire many medieval structures, the surrounding wall and its gates, the City Hall, the Cathedral, the Porticos of Piazza del Popolo. Of course there are wine tastings every 4 meters..
